- It’s official: Geno’s a Jet
Let the quarterback competition commence.
On the day rookies are due to report, Geno Smith signed a four-year contract, the Jets announced Monday morning. As a second-round pick (39th overall), his deal is for $5 million, based on the rookie wage scale. Figure about 70 percent of the contract ($3.5 million) is guaranteed. That was the primary holdup, according to a source. As a quarterback, Smith wanted more guaranteed money than what the 39th pick usually receives.

For weeks, Mark Sanchez has been telling everyone he expects to win the Jets’ quarterback competition. Pundits, too, are predicting a Sanchez victory. Geno Smith has other ideas.
“I feel like I have a great shot,” he told the Charleston Gazette on Saturday during an autograph-signing appearance in West Virginia, where he starred for three seasons. “I did a pretty good job overall of just adapting to the system and playbook and felt very comfortable with it by the end of OTAs and mandatory camp.
