  • Jets announce 15 cuts
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The Jets released the names of 15 cuts Friday before practice. There were no surprises, as all of the names were previously reported.

The roster is down to 60, which means seven more have to go by 9 p.m.

One draft pick was waived — OT Robert Griffin, a sixth-round choice from Baylor. If the Redskins claim him, he can reunite with his former college teammate, the other Robert Griffin (wink, wink).

The rest of the cuts: WR Joseph Collins, LB Marcus Dowtin, G Fred Koloto, G Matt Kroul, P Spencer Lanning, CB LeQuan Lewis, TE Tarren Lloyd, S D’Anton Lynn, CB Julian Posey, DE Jay Richardson, WR Eron Riley, LB Brett Roy, QB Matt Simms and NT Martin Tevaseu.

  • JetBlue fulfills fan’s request for Jets plane
David Baghdassarian is a huge Jets fan.

His Florida license plate is JTSFN, his tailgating grill is green and white and he dressed as Rex Ryan for Christmas. No, not Halloween. Christmas.

So when Baghdassarian was getting ready for a trip back to New York, where he was born and raised, he thought he’d give it a try: Get JetBlue to fly him home in its Jets plane.

As part of its partnership with the Jets, the company has been flying around a plane wrapped with a Jets logo since October 2010.

  • Jets begin to pare roster, Conner safe
The Jets began to cut players Friday morning, and the only news is that FB John Conner is safe, according to a league source.

The final cuts are due by 9 p.m., meaning there’s always a chance that could change. But unless an upgrade shakes free over the next 24 to 48 hours, the Jets will stick with Conner. The season-ending knee injury to FB/TE Josh Baker may have saved Conner.

The Jets are roughly $5 million to $6 million under the salary cap, but the word close to the team is that money will weigh heavily into decisions as they finalize their 53-man roster.

  • Bloody Friday, cut-down day
Friday is the bloodiest day of the year in the NFL. Rosters must be pared to 53 by 9 p.m., which means the Jets have 22 pink slips to hand out.

There’s always a surprise or two. This year, most of the speculation is focused on FB John Conner. Other veterans on the bubble include WR Chaz Schilens, LB Ricky Sapp and CB Isaiah Trufant.

    Our projections:

LIKELY GONERS: QB Matt Simms, WR Joe Collins, WR Royce Pollard, TE Hayden Smith, TE Tarren Lloyd, OT Paul Cornick, OG Fred Koloto, OG Matt Kroul, OT Dennis Landolt, DL Damon Harrison, LB Brett Roy, CB Donnie Fletcher, P Spencer Lanning, CB LeQuan Lewis.

  • Jets enjoy leadership seminar
PHILADELPHIA — On Wednesday, Rex Ryan did something unusual. He excused 19 players from practice — all veterans — and sent them to a leadership training seminar near the Jets’ facility. The coaches did the same thing in May, and he wanted the players to experience it , too.

The Jets are trying to foster good team chemistry, a major issue last season.

“I liked it, I had a lot of fun,” guard Matt Slauson said of the six-hour traing exercise. “I saw a lot of guys come out of their shells and take charge.

  • Three up, three down
PHILADELPHIA — A look at positives and negatives from the Jets’ 28-10 loss to the Eagles:

    1. Greg McElroy. He was surrounded by chaos, backups at almost every position on the field, but the second-year quarterback never lost his poise. He showed good command of Tony Sparano’s offense, never appearing rattled even though he was running for his life at times. He led the offense to 164 yards and 11 first downs in the first half. In short, he looked like he belonged.

  • Ryan non-committal on Conner
PHILADELPHIA — Every veteran starter on the Jets received the night off — except fullback John Conner. It’s usually not a good sign when a veteran plays in the final preseason game. Afterward, Rex Ryan passed on an opportunity to squash speculation about Conner’s status with the team.

“I don’t want to talk about anybody’s specific roster spot,” Ryan said after the 28-10 loss to the Eagles. “We’ll look at the tape and we’ll let you know tomorrow.

  • Jason Smith solid in debut
PHILADELPHIA — Jason Smith is a quick study. After only one meeting and an abbreviated practice, the former Rams first-round pick started at left tackle Thursday night and played the entire first half without any glaring mistakes.

The intial play for Smith, acquired Tuesday in the Wayne Hunter trade, to play 10 plays.

“I thought he held up well considering he had been here for one meeting,” Rex Ryan said after the Jets’ 28-10 loss to the Eagles.

  • Jets Finally Score In Loss to Eagles
Wow. Trading Wayne Hunter and reaching the end zone, all in the same week. Coincidence? Yeah, probably, but I thought it would be funny to pretend it wasn’t for two seconds. The Jets scored their first touchdown of the 2012 preseason on Thursday night, courtesy of third- string quarterback Greg McElroy’s 6-yard pass to RB [...]
PHILADELPHIA, P.A. — The Jets touchdown woes are over. You may now exhale and, slowly, remove your hand from the panic button. After three games, 13 quarters, 37 offensive drives, 201 minutes, 199 plays the team’s third-string quarterback, Greg McElroy, found the rookie Terrance Ganaway six yards out for the first score of the preseason.
    “Now [...]
  • Rapid Reaction: Eagles 28, Jets 10
PHILADELPHIA — The Jets completed an 0-4 preseason, falling to the Eagles, 21-10, Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field. It was the Jets’ first winless preseason since 1993, Bruce Coslet’s final year. Heck, even Rich Kotite won in the preseason.

At least the Jets ended their touchdown drought, scoring in the first quarter. It took 37 possessions and 201 minutes, 5 seconds of elapsed time, finally reaching the end zone on their 199th play of the preseason.

New York Jets third-string quarterback Greg McElroy completes to running back Terrance Ganaway for a 6-yard touchdown. The Jets lead with a score of 7-0.
  • Pregame: Jason Smith starts at LT
PHILADELPHIA — The Jets face the Eagles on Thursday night in the final preseason game. As expected, the Jets are sitting most of their starters. The starting lineup is filled with second- and third-team players. Many of these names will be unemployed in 24 hours.

The news is that newly acquired OT Jason Smith will start at left tackle. On Wednesday, Rex Ryan said he wanted to get Smith about 10 snaps, depending on how quickly he picked up the playbook.

  • Jets Bring Back CB Lewis
15 days after getting cut, CB LeQuan Lewis has resigned with the team. I guess they wanted to see him play one last time, that or they just needed someone to play since they were short a CB after waiving CB Ryan Steed yesterday, Jets signed CB LeQuan Lewis #nyj — Manish Mehta(@MMehtaNYDN) August 30, [...]
