  • Rex report: Top-5 defense is a lock
CORTLAND, N.Y. — New Rex isn’t as brash as Old Rex, but he still exudes tremendous confidence on certain subjects — especially his own defense.

The Jets’ coach all but guaranteed a top-five ranking for his defense. He wouldn’t predict a return to No. 1, their standing in 2009, but he added: “Am I confident in our defense? Absolutely. Granted, I said top-five. I mean, that’s a given, I don’t care who we put out there. You could put (defensive coordinator) Mike Pettine at free safety.

  • Injury Update 8/15: Po’uha, Holmes, Hunter, Schilens
Defensive linemen Sione Po’uha is going to miss the remainder of the preseason with a lower back problem.  Po’uha was absent from practice yesterday for an examination on his back but an MRI showed no structural damage.  While needing time away from practice the Jets and Po’uha believe he will be available for opening day. Po’uha [...]
  • Practice report: Where’s Santonio?
CORTLAND, N.Y. — Santonio Holmes, nursing a rib-cartilage injury, was nowhere to be seen Wednesday on the practice field. According to the team, he was inside the facility, receiving treatment.

In recent days, Holmes was on the field, working out on the side with other injured players and participating in light positional drills. Rex Ryan already has said that Holmes won’t play Saturday night against the Giants — a no-brainer — but the question now becomes his availability for the third preseason game.

ESPN has a love affair with Tim Tebow and the New York Jets. As a Jets fan, I should be really happy about all this coverage, but I’m going to tell you, I would IF the coverage was about football.

  • Tebow Jets jerseys finally back on market
On Wednesday morning, Tim Tebow’s Jets jersey appeared back on, the NFL’s official online store, the first time adult-size jerseys have been available since mid-May.

Tebow was traded from the Broncos to the Jets on March 22, just eight days before Nike was scheduled to take over for Reebok as the league’s official apparel provider. Realizing a last chance to cash in off one of the league’s most marketable players, Reebok took 6,000 blank Jets jerseys and sold them to retailers.

  • Morning wake-up call: Day 21
CORTLAND, N.Y. — Wednesday is central New York’s last opportunity to see Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow and the gang in living color. Yep, it’s the Jets’ final public practice in this friendly burg. They practice again Thursday, but that’s open only to the media (Wildcat, anyone?). After that, they head home to Florham Park, N.J.

Unless another blast from the past shows up (see: Chad Pennington on Tuesday), the spotlight will likely shift to Saturday night’s preseason game against the Giants.

  • Golden Snoopy in hand, Rex eyes Giants’ hardware
CORTLAND, N.Y. – It wasn’t a guarantee by any means, but Rex Ryan expressed his envious emotions regarding the New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin’s ’super’ bling Tuesday afternoon.
Instead of the gaudy ring that commemorates the ultimate team achievement, he has to live with the Snoopy trophy –  a constant reminder of the ‘good [...]
  • Three things we learned: Day 20
CORTLAND, N.Y. — Observations from Tuesday at training camp:

    1. Mark Sanchez’s patience is being tested. He might have the toughest quarterback job in the NFL. Not only is he dealing with the Tebow factor and a new offense, but he’s trying to break in a new receiving corps. Without Santonio Holmes, Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens (all injured) his top targets are Patrick Turner, rookie Stephen Hill and rookie Jordan White. On one occasion in practice, Sanchez barked at White for running the wrong route.

  • Jets Waive DB Torrance
According to the Jets have released DB – Devon Torrence placing him on waivers: The New York Jets have waived cornerback Devon Torrence. • Tebow: Birthday boy, cover boy
CORTLAND, N.Y. — Another ho-hum day in the life of Tim Tebow: He turned 25, was serenaded by fans after practice with a chorus of “Happy Birthday” and appeared on the cover of GQ magazine.

This marked the second straight year that a Jets quarterback appeared on the cover of GQ’s football issue. Unlike Mark Sanchez, Tebow didn’t pose for pictures and didn’t consent to an inteview, according to a Jets spokesman. He appears, shirtless, in the spread, but it’s an old photo, taken from his days at Florida.

  • Rex report: Pouha update
CORTLAND, N.Y. — The Sione Pouha situation is becoming a bit of a mystery. The nose tackle hasn’t practiced since Aug. 1, when he required stitches for a gash on his forehead, but now his issue is an ailing back.

Pouha hasn’t been seen in recent days. Rex Ryan revealed that Pouha was in Manhattan for “treatment” on his back, although he didn’t say when that visit occurred. Ryan didn’t provide any details, except to say Pouha hasn’t undergone any type of procedures.

  • Practice report: Hill hurts finger, Cro scores
CORTLAND, N.Y. — The last thing the Jets need is another injury at wide receiver, but rookie Stephen Hill hurt his right ring finger Tuesday and didn’t finish practice.

The preliminary indication was that the finger wasn’t broken, and it was confirmed later in the day when his X-rays came back negative. The team is calling it “mallet finger,” which means there could be some tendon damage, but it’s not believed to be serious. Hill said he hurt the finger while engaged with CB Darrelle Revis.

  • Morning wake-up call: Day 20
CORTLAND, N.Y. — Happy birthday, Tim.

Yes, Tim Tebow turns 25, which is sure to draw a response from the fans at Tuesday’s practice. The question is, does he get a birthday serenade?

After a closed practice that made national headlines because they unveiled the Wildcat, the Jets go back in front of the crowd. If you’re planning to attend, don’t expect to see another dose of the Wildcat. They probably will keep it under wraps until the next closed practice.

  • Meet Karl Dunbar
One of the coaching changes that the NY Jets made this past off-season was on the defensive line.  They brought in highly regarded Karl Dunbar who had previously worked with the Minnesota Vikings.  Dunbar has vitiligo, which is a condition that causes depigmentation of sections of skin.  He played 3 seasons in the NFL and [...]
  • The Wildcat Rule
The first rule of the Wildcat is that you do not talk about the Wildcat.  That was communicated to the main stream media in attendance at Jets Camp today.  The practice was closed to the public. Rex Ryan added: Obviously, we’re going to run some Wildcat with Tim (Tebow).  You know that’s no big secret, [...]
