Nothing Has Changed, I Don’t Think Fireman Ed is Coming Back

I conducted an interview with Fireman Ed on my own podcast, the Jets Twit podcast on August 5, 2013.  I urge you to listen to it as you will hear a similar theme that Ed was quoted in the latest Metro NY article.

The reappearance of Ed’s name can be attributed to the site “BringBackEd.com“and all the coverage they have been getting, but Ed Anzalone appears to be in the same mindset,  as in not coming back permanently.

What has Changed?  Nothing.

The article cites that it seems that the BringBackEd.com site might be working.  But here is the thing, Ed is saying the SAME EXACT THING he said back in 2013.

What’s the source?  The Jets Twit Podcast Go give it a listen, but I’ll pull out the significant quotes and you be the judge.  When you listen to the episode, and read the quotes from the new Metro article, it sounds identical.

Conclusion:  NOTHING HAS CHANGED.  My prediction, the door is still open, but I don’t think it’s the petition that will get him back.  I don’t think it’s working now, with all due respect to the BringBackEd.com crew.  If Fireman Ed comes back, it’s because of his own terms, not the fans, the Jets Organization, or any other influence, in my honest opinion.  I also believe if he does make an appearance, it won’t be a consistent occurrence.

Again, I tip my cap to any fan who wants him back.  I’m in that camp who thinks the Jets chant has been flat since Ed left.  I hope that the guys are BringBackEd.com are successful, but my gut says no.

I hope I am wrong!

Sunday’s Quote from Metro

On Sunday, in his first interview on the topic, Anzalone told Metro that he is still retired from the role. But when asked if he could return, he didn’t squash the idea.

“I don’t know. I told you the way I feel. Will I come back? I’d rather see someone else make that thing happen then me come back. I’d rather see them give a young guy a fair chance. If that thing needed my help, I’d help,” Anzalone told Metro. “If they needed my help I would try to help them in any way I can.”

“I’m honored, people want you back,” Anzalone said. “It’s an emotional thing, no doubt about it. My love for that team will never die. I never will quit on that team. I won’t quit on this team I love. I stopped being Fireman Ed. That was my choice. I started Fireman Ed and I ended Fireman Ed. That was my choice. Did I want to? No, of course not. Did I leave because we were losing to the Patriots? No.

“That was just one of many times during the years that we lost and got crushed. There were a lot of circumstances. When you go into the bathroom and get accosted, it might be time to go. That time, I couldn’t say it but now I can. When it comes to the point that you have to worry about your family, your well-being, it might be the time to move on. That’s the reality of it.

“My love has never stopped.”

August 5, 2013 Quote from The Jets Twit Podcast

Erik Manassy interviewed Ed Anazolone (Fireman Ed) asked him the question:  Would you ever come back?  Go to the 24:35 Mark.

Erik:  So you will never come back?

Fireman Ed:

I would never say never, I mean, if the situation was…. Put it this way Erik, I hope someone else can do it, and they do it, and then I don’t need to come back.  You know what I mean, my days are through.  I tried to do the best I could and that’s it, but someone else can rock the house and they’ll forget all about me.  You know what I mean.

If the fans and the time was where it could make a difference and they thought I could make a difference, I would abso… I would never turn my back.   But to come back consistently, NAH, I’d never come back consistently.

…but would I come back, if the situation was right and you know, and if it was going to make a difference for the team, would I do it?  Yeah I would.

I led the chant for Monday Night Football against the Dolphins. Ed wants to pass the torch and with his approval I’d be honored to revive it with his help. Give life long Jet fan Jimmy The Jet the opportunity.
