Vick: “Geno’s the starting quarterback for that football team”

During a family fitness event in Philadelphia Saturday,  New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick was quoted saying that Geno Smith is the starting QB for THAT team.

Many fans and pundits believed that Vick was brought in to push Geno in his second year.  Vick had said this off season that he plans to start wherever he goes but it looks like the veteran QB has conceded.

Vick had made news earlier this weekend when he called an audible and changed his number from #8 to #1 via a tweet.  Why is that news, well it’s New York, and everything a QB does in this city is news.

One day later, the quote of the off season so far might be the one where Vick says that Geno is the Starter.  I’ve been on record many times on the Jets Twit Podcast, on this blog, and on twitter that Geno Smith is going to be the starter and will start 2014.  It will be his gig to lose.  Going into the season, Vick is making it clear with this strong statement.

Previously this week, reading between the lines, offensive coordinator, Marty Mornhinweg says Michael Vick’s job is to push Geno Smith. All Vick did today was to confirm it and put to bed the QB controversy. There isn’t going to be one this year, (at least heading into training camp).  Sorry folks.

When the Jets signed free agent Michael Vick in March, every indication was that Vick and Geno Smith would compete to be the team’s starting quarterback this fall.

But the competition already appears to be over.

Vick said so himself.

“Geno’s the starting quarterback for that football team,” Vick said in a brief interview this afternoon during a family fitness event at Knight’s Personal Fitness in this city’s Kensington neighborhood.

“Ultimately our goal is to try to help Geno become the best quarterback that he can be. Myself and [third-stringer Matt Simms] are all trying to put him in a position where he can get better from year one to year two.”
