Sanchez Following The Jeter Playbook?

Sanchez Following The Jeter Playbook?

By now, you’ve probably heard the news, as heartbreaking as it may seem. SanchEva is no more. Or was it LongChez? These celeb couple names perplex me. Regardless, Mark Sanchez and Eva Longoria have split – and wouldn’t you know it, No. 6 had his best game in a difficult, up-and-down 2012 season.

Coincidence? Before you answer that, let me take you back to 2011, when a certain New York athlete was in the throes of a whirlwind romance with a crazy eccentric wonderful starlet from a popular network TV show. He was also in the midst of the worst stretch of his illustrious career. He was chasing a career milestone, while at the same time fighting off questions about just how much he had left. And yet suddenly, the course reversed itself. The player rediscovered his stride, passed his milestone and was suddenly the player everyone remembered him to be.

Alas, only a few short weeks later, it was revealed that this athlete and the starlet were no more. Gossip columnists wept as young New York City women again imagined themselves receiving their very own gift baskets. And ever since the two parted, the athlete has appeared re-invigorated, playing with the fervor of a 20-year old. And thus, The Minka Kelly Corollary was born.

No one’s saying Mark Sanchez is Derek Jeter – at least, not on the field (off of it, well, Mark seems to be right on track). But for anyone who’s ever been in a dysfunctional relationship (and we here at JetsTwit are not implying anything about Mr. Sanchez and Ms. Longoria’s time together) – it’s not hard to feel freed when it’s over, to feel like you suddenly have new life, like you can suddenly breathe again.

Maybe Sanchez goes back in the tank this week against Miami or after the bye in Seattle. Or maybe he plays good, solid football the rest of the way and helps the Jets to 9-7 and a possible playoff spot in a weak AFC. Either one is certainly possible. I’m just saying that we’ve seen this story before and maybe sometimes, it’s not all about X’s and O’s.

So what do you think? Will Sanchez play better now that he’s unattached from Eva?
