The Daily News has learned that Gang Green has explored trading right tackle Wayne Hunter this offseason. The Jets were engaged in trade discussions involving Hunter with at least one NFC team, but a deal couldn’t be struck, according to sources.
Although the Jets still appear amenable to trading Hunter, the lack of depth along the offensive line may ultimately prevent them from dealing him. There is also a belief in the organization that Hunter, who will be entering his ninth season, could improve under offensive coordinator Tony Sparano’s new blocking schemes.
“We expect Wayne back,” general manager Mike Tannenbaum told WFAN radio last week. “We expect him to be our starter.”
I’m sure the first reaction by Jets fans are GET IT DONE! I know Wayne Hunter was the whipping boy of what went wrong this season and look, you can’t defend the guy when he was a hole and a direct line to Mark Sanchez.
Part of Mark’s issue was he was lying on his back constantly due to Wayne. Manish says that the Jets had a problem unloading Wayne. Gee, I wonder why. First, his salary, who’s going to take that on, and second, if I’m a GM of another team, why am I taking this guy?
At this point, if it is possible, you can only hope that Wayne can get better. As Manish states in his article, the Jets have no depth at the position. Mabye the Jets will draft a starter, or pick up an established player either through free agency or a trade, but Wayne can fill in as a backup.
