Yesterday on the Michael Kay show, first Joe Namath gave his opinion of the current situation on the Jets and later Rex was a guest where he was played Joe’s quote and then he fired back.
This isn’t the first time that Joe has offered his opinion and maybe rubbed people the wrong way. Last year he was commenting on Mark Sanchez and the quarterback respectfully shot back. This time, in full Rex Ryan fashion, he called Joe by his last name and said boldly, “He Doesn’t know our Team”.
“It’s rather alarming,” Namath said on the Michael Kay Show. “It starts at the top. Coach Rex Ryan, he’s been doing a great job, getting us to two conference championship games, but there’s one thing about the athlete: You keep telling him how good he is, he’s going to start believing it to the point that he may not be preparing quite the way he should. He may be losing some respect for the other team.”
Rex Fired Back:
“The great thing is I’m confident with our football team,” Ryan said. “There’s no question about it. I’ve told you this many times, I’ve never gone into a game I didn’t think I’d win. (I) haven’t won them all, but I certainly think we can and will. I’m not going to change who I am because Joe Namath said something. Namath can come in here, and if he can still throw, we’ll have him as a backup quarterback, but you know what? He doesn’t know our team. He’s on the outside. Even though he’s a Jet, and once you’re a Jet, you’re always a Jet, but he’s on the outside. He’s not in these meetings. I think if he was, he’d be shocked with the preparation.”
Now I follow Joe on Twitter and I think the line gets a little fuzzy from fans when they hear Joe talk about the Jets. You would assume that he is very tight with the Jets organization, and to some degree that is true, but at the end of the day, the guy is a fan just like you and me.
The question is, why can’t he rant and rave like the rest of us? He’s a fan. Oh sure, he has something the rest of us doesn’t, the only SB Ring with the Jets and Joe is probably the most celebrated New York Jets Player in team history.
Ray Lucas, a former quarterback of the NY Jets, works for SNY and he rants and raves all the time about the Jets. How come no one is going off on him? Well… I think you look at the History and accomplishments, but one thing is clear, Joe is stirring up the hornets nest. It’s not often you see Rex annoyed and this time it is with a member of the “family”.
So is this a good thing or should Joe keep his thoughts to himself?
Offensive Coordinator, Marty Mornhinweg, was unavailable to explain himself to the media after the game Sunday, but Yahoo sports have reached out this morning and here are some quotes from the Jets' OC.
